The 'Cats of Second Ward' exhibit is inspired by Kathleen Medina's efforts with stray cats and cat rescue. The hardships encountered in this endeavour have inspired her to portray these stray kitties in a new light. Through her artwork, Medina hopes to shift perspectives on stray cats and humanize them, highlighting their resilience against challenges like heat, hurricanes, and starvation. Despite not choosing their circumstances, these cats endure significant struggles and should not be discarded simply because they do not immediately bring monetary value or convenience. The phrase 'cats are an invasive species' often comes up, but Medina challenges this view, suggesting that humans share similar traits of impact on their environments. This exhibit seeks to acknowledge the loss and struggle faced by these animals, advocating for a more compassionate view towards their existence.
This exhibit showcases a series of photographs hoping to bring to light the unique personalities and stories of these urban cats. Each image invites viewers into the world of these community icons, highlighting their resilience and the subtle interplay between their independence and their reliance on the human communities around them. Join us for a glimpse into the intriguing lives of the Cats of 2nd Ward, a heartfelt tribute to the spirited companions that roam the bustling streets of one of Houston’s most dynamic neighborhoods.

Thank you to Reel Quick Film lab and The Houston Arts Alliance for helping bring this exhibit to life.
